Before I start the challenge (detailed in my post ‘The Plan’), it may be good to recognise my style of film and know bad habits that I need to break free from.
First and foremost, I am very particular about the art that I consume. I want to feel something, and I want to think about something. As such, I usually end up watching very depressing and dark things. This is probably a standard I’ll hold the films I see to, and will form the foundation of my review of them.
A major downside to this kind of consumption is that I tend not to like very much, and as such, find myself revisiting and rewatching things I do like many, many times. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen the Star Wars films – though my ability to quote all of the lines may be an indicator! And though it’s good to have some in-depth knowledge of select films, it does me no favours when it comes to overall trivia.
Genres. I have very strong feelings about genres. I adore psychological thrillers, and generally like rom-coms, animated movies, and sci-fi. More intensely, what I absolutely cannot stand are slapstick comedies, cliched horrors (more cheap jump scares), film noir, and crime dramas. My friends are all too familiar with my aversion to comedy, action, and horror (which are the ones frequently popping up in people’s recommendations). As part of this challenge, I’m going to try to broaden my tastes. When I finally develop a sense of humour, I will have succeeded.
